Abstract:
The simulation of glare scenarios in driving simulators is challenging, due to the limitations of conventional projector and display technology. Existing approaches usually add light sources to the optical path by combining common simulator technology with, for example, LED grids. Our approach is to simulate glare sources on the screen by an additional projector and methods that allows to use its light more efficiently. In a first attempt, a concept with retroreflective sheets is proposed, and the requirements and limitations for realization are derived. Further development of the concept leads to an attempt with holographic diffusors, and this second concept is also evaluated. Initial measurements show the feasibility of the concept for simulating high contrasts. Current limitations are discussed, and future steps are outlined.
