abstract = {An advanced driver assistance system to forward turn-based alignment manoeuvres would be an interesting option when aligning by turning with a narrow orthogonal road. We believe that designing such a system according to the principles of ecological interface design would maximise its effectiveness by revealing the importance of the car's driving capabilities in these situations. We formalised the possibilities of turn-based alignment as an affordance, designed a visual aid that makes this affordance visible, and tested its benefits for drivers. In a fixed-base driving simulator, three groups of drivers controlled the steering of low-handling, habitual-handling and high-handling cars at a constant speed to enter a narrow orthogonal road to their right. We manipulated the curvature of the path required to enter the aperture (๐๐๐๐). In half of the trials, we assisted drivers with our augmented virtuality interface. Without assistance, drivers did not perfectly perceive the possibility to enter the narrow orthogonal road with reference to their car's handling capabilities. Oppositely, drivers exploited the benefits of the interface we designed ecologically to reduce collisions and aborted turning attempts, and to maximize successful turn-based alignment manoeuvres when possible. Perspectives on the implementation of such assistance in real-life situations are discussed.
