abstract = {The aim was to develop and evaluate a co-simulation platform where interaction between automated buses and vulnerable road users could be studied. A second aim was to test alternative internal and vehicleexternal human-machine interface (HMI) options for the vehicle-passenger and driver-vehicle interaction at bus transit points. The scenario was a virtual reality (VR) co-simulation of automated docking at a bus stop. The scenario was evaluated from both the passenger’s and bus driver’s perspective. Three different HMI concepts were tested. The participants’ opinions about the automated docking and the different HMIs were investigated using questionnaires and interviews. The results of the HMI evaluation showed that HMI solutions with light strips in the windshield had highest acceptance, trust, and usability. Passengers preferred automation to be clearly communicated in and outside the bus. VR simulations proved to be a useful tool for evaluating automated functions not yet possible to study in the real world.},
