Abstract:
Additionally to methods such as Wizard-of-Oz and questionnaires, Virtual Reality (VR) is already used by a considerable number of researchers in the field of autonomous mobility. One of the applications for VR is the investigation of people’s behaviours towards autonomous vehicles as pedestrians and passengers. The goal of the paper is to evaluate the suitability of a VR platform for this specific application and to compare it to other methods. For this evaluation, criteria are defined and weighted based on a literature review and interviews with experts from VR industries and academia. A qualitative assessment of the VR platform is conducted with the weighted criteria, which enables the comparison to other methods. The results show that aspects such as safety and validity of results are the most important criteria for conducting research in the field of autonomous mobility, followed by criteria such as the involvement of time and cost as well as a usable interaction with the system. In future research, alternative methods will be tested in the same context in order to objectify the findings and further refine the criteria set.
