Abstract:
The application of head-mounted displays in driving simulation is controversially discussed due to shortcomings as for example their low resolution, latency and discomfort. This paper aims at investigating the practical impact of these shortcomings concerning the aspects of immersion, distance and velocity estimation, and traffic sign recognition. Additionally, the application potential of augmented reality for the implementation of real objects, such as the steering wheel or hands, into the virtual environment is analyzed. For this purpose, a comparative study between a static simulator with HMD and a reference simulator with projection system was conducted. The investigation of the immersion showed no significant difference between the simulators. Concerning the velocity perception, an underestimation was recognizable for the HMD, whereas an overestimation was determined for the simulator with the projection system. The distance of the traffic sign recognition of the HMD (24 m) was significantly lower than that of the projection system (78 m). An improvement to a distance of 50 m was possible by increasing the sign sizes, which was not noticed by 86% of the subjects. Nevertheless, the projection system was still preferred by 86% of the subjects.
