abstract = {Hydroplaning significantly impacts road safety by creating a water wedge between a vehicle’s tires and the road, reducing the vehicle’s responsiveness to driver inputs. This phenomenon is influenced by vehicle speed, water depth on the road, and tire condition, affecting critical parameters like cornering stiffness, relaxation length, and friction coefficient. This study evaluates a control logic designed to assist drivers during hydroplaning. A driving simulator was used for its fully repeatable test conditions and safe environment. A novel tire model was developed and integrated with a 14-degree-of-freedom vehicle model to simulate hydroplaning effects, and an Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS) was designed to aid in vehicle control. The ADAS was tested using a double-lane-change scenario, with cones placed at varying distances from the puddle to affect system intervention timing. Drivers with different experience levels can try to control the vehicle with ADAS on and off, at different speeds, and with cones placed at different distances from the beginning of the puddle. A statistical approach was used to evaluate the ADAS’s effectiveness. The study revealed valuable insights into how everyday drivers manage hydroplaning, highlighting the potential of ADAS to enhance vehicle control and improve safety during such events.},
