abstract = {The validation of more and more complex and diversified ADAS features requires testing an unmanageable number of use-cases, sometimes expressed in terms of billions of kilometres to travel. Numerical simulation becomes inescapable but meets some limitations such as the representativeness of the vehicle dynamics model.
The Vehicle-in-the-Loop method described in this paper consists of replacing the vehicle’s physical sensor signals with perfect perception of a simulated environment. Thus, some limitations of both numerical simulation and physical tests are bypassed.
In parallel to an existing end-to-end massive simulation process, ADAS testing teams at Renault have developed a complementary approach focusing on validating ADAS software decisions. Three kinds of testing – numerical, hybrid, and physical – are performed in sequence by the same team on the same proving ground. Vehicle-in-the-loop and physical testing naturally share the same test track, but moreover we find it is essential to perform the full numerical simulation close, in time and space, to the test track.
This paper will highlight the Agile, Lean, and eco-friendly mindset of this trackside simulation approach, and also explain how this augmented reality testing method improves efficiency, quality, and safety of ADAS validation on test tracks.},
