Evaluation of a 3-DOF Mid-Size Simulator Concept: A Behavioural Validation Study

Abstract:
For the evaluation of a 3DOF mid-size simulator concept the results from several simulated highway studies will be compared with an on-road study. The evaluation is aimed at investigating the effect of the presence of vehicle vibrations and the width of the field of view on the level of simulator validity. In this analysis, validity is quantified by the driver’s stabilisation performance and task-workload. Furthermore, the interaction effects regarding the representation of vehicle vibrations and the presented field of view are examined. For the distance stabilisation absolute validity is plausible for all simulator conditions. The presence of vehicle vibrations provides evidence for absolute validity for the lateral stabilisation performance based on the standard deviation of lane position. In combination with a secondary task only a large field of view and the presentation of vehicle vibrations can provide evidence for absolute validity. No significant differences can be found for the self-reported mental demand which indicates absolute validity for all tested simulator configurations. Simulator sickness was not affected by vehicle vibrations. However an influence of simulator sickness and a large field of view was found.
