Abstract:
The tire to road interaction determines the vehicle response and is perceived by the driver. It is, however, not clear how this complex interaction contributes to the perception of motion and what parts of it that are of importance.
This paper presents a study to investigate the perception of some fundamental characteristics of the interaction, described by tire model characteristics. An experiment was set up as a tire test with four test tires and one reference tire. Eight expert drivers were used as test subjects in a qualitative assessment.
The different characteristics were not perceived equally strong, and some of them were described in a contradictive manner among the test subjects. The result of this first study on the perception of a tire to road interaction gives insight into what characteristics are of importance from a driving simulator perspective and could potentially be used to determine the properties of a good tire in the driver’s perspective.
