Abstract:
Driver-vehicle cooperation offers an opportunity to improve the driving performance through the exploitation of human-automation synergy. This paper describes the implementation and the evaluation of a new cooperation principle between driver and Automated Driving (AD) system. In the framework of a use case on highway merging section, we discussed the scenario modelling, system functional and HMI design. A simulator experiment with 22 participants was performed. Positive preliminary results on the utility of the principle and issues of HMI are discussed. Through this paper, we also aim to demonstrate the strengths of driving simulation techniques in terms of functional design and human factor studies on AD technologies.
